Dear Birders,

I am happy to write that after some weeks of investigation seven person were
arrested by the Hungarian police and waiting for the trial, who linked to
the huge bird massacre - the greatest of all - in our county (Nov., 2001) by
Italian hunters. The result of the investigation shows that alltogether 150
hunters are affected via the Italian based Green Sports Ltd, and they were
helped by 19 Hungarian hunting companies. Main part of the specimen were
killed by shotguns, mist nets, and most of them were attracted by tape
luring, etc.

The total number of the murdered birds is established at 11.668 specimen
which belongs to 30 species with many endengared, like Curlews, Ferruginous
Ducks or Corncrakes. The nature conservation value is finally declared to
3.850.000 USD (!!!) by the reference values of the Hungarian laws
(commercial value is much more).

The birds were killed for South Italian restaurants, where they make special
foods from the breast of larks, or special paté from the tongue of some
other Passerines.
